Kidney disease is growing more and more prevalent in The Bahamas, impacting hundreds of Bahamian families who struggle with the illness.
Our Story
Founded in April 2021 by Tamika Roberts, The Bahamas Kidney Association (BKA) emerged with a mission to provide assistance to individuals grappling with kidney disease. As a living kidney donor herself, Tamika brings a personal commitment to the cause. Alongside a team of dedicated volunteers, the BKA is driven by two core objectives: diminishing the prevalence of kidney failure in The Bahamas and enhancing the quality of life for those affected by kidney disease.
Their collective efforts are creating a lasting impact and fostering a brighter future for individuals facing this challenging condition. Inspired by the remarkable legacy of Dr. Ada Thompson, a tireless advocate for kidney disease awareness, the BKA was established to carry forward her invaluable work with her continued support.
The BKA serves as a guiding light, fostering hope and compassion within the kidney community, steadfast in its commitment to achieve a healthier Bahamas.
What is kidney disease?
What is
kidney disease?
Kidney disease means that there is lasting damage to your kidneys, and they are not working as they should. If your kidney function slowly gets worse with time, your kidney disease is called “chronic”.
There is no cure for chronic kidney disease (CKD), but there are steps you can take to preserve function for as long as possible. Late-stage kidney disease requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.
Our Mission
Our mission is to enhance public understanding of kidney function and promote preventive measures against kidney disease. We are committed to decreasing the prevalence of kidney failure in The Bahamas and enhancing the well-being of individuals impacted by kidney disease.
